EV Charging
The initial cost of purchasing an electric vehicle (EV) are generally higher, although there are some great second-hand deals on the market. However, EVs are normally cheaper to run, since electricity is more affordable in comparison to petrol, or diesel. Recharging your car at home will normally result in the greatest cost savings, especially if you can charge overnight.
Our Apex charging points can be installed in homes with a garage or driveway, or at workplaces. Contact us for quotations on car charger supply and installation.
Installing and using an EV Charging Point at Home
Most of your EV car charging will be done at home, preferably overnight. If you have a driveway or garage, the cheapest and most convenient way is to install a dedicated charge point. Charging your EV at home can be half the cost of using public EV charge points.
When the Energy Centre installs an EV charge point at your home, or place of work, we will register the energy device with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). The DNO is the organisation responsible for supplying electricity to your home.
The UK Government has advice on how to register your new energy device in England, Scotland and Wales.
Ensure you have a suitable electricity tariff for your EV Home Charging Unit
Charging your EV at home will increase your electricity bills, that’s a given. However, you can shop around to find a tariff that works for you. The Energy Saving Trust has some excellent suggestions.
- You could potentially save about £300 a year if you switch to a cheaper fixed-rate tariff of £0.14/kWh. If you averaged 7,400 miles each year, that would work out as around 5,200 ‘free’ electric miles a year.
- Ask your supplier if you could switch to an off-peak tariff, allowing you to benefit from cheaper overnight electricity. There are energy companies that would reward you for charging your car at off-peak times, such as overnight. Perhaps investigate a switch to an Economy 7 tariff, it might cut the cost of your electricity bill.
- Now ‘smart’ off-peak tariffs are being introduced, which could save you even more money. New smart meters make it easier for energy suppliers to offer new types of ‘smart’ off-peak tariffs that could help you save money when you charge your vehicle at off-peak times. These tariffs may also give you the option to get your supplier to charge your car at the cheapest possible time in the day, for guaranteed savings, such as when it is windy, to take advantage of renewable power. Ask us about smart charging!
- Recently, energy providers have started to offer a discounted rate to energy bill payers who own or lease an electric vehicle.
